Oakland, CA - 04/20/2004 - Scientific Learning (Nasdaq: SCIL) today announced its revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2004 was $7.1 million, compared to $6.4 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2003, an increase of 12%.

Deferred revenue totaled $14.8 million at quarter-end, an increase of 17%, compared to $12.7 million on March 31, 2003. Approximately 90% of deferred revenue is expected to be recognized as revenue in the next four quarters.

"We are pleased that K-12 sales increased 28% in the quarter, well within our 20-30% target range and well in excess of industry rates," said Robert C. Bowen, Chairman and CEO of Scientific Learning. "Although the first quarter is the smallest of the year, this solid performance demonstrates the growing acceptance of the Fast ForWord™ family of products to produce fast and enduring changes with struggling readers."

"The accountability environment for K-12 educational leaders continues to change rapidly," said Mr. Bowen. "These leaders are no longer required to just provide access for all students but must now demonstrate adequate yearly progress for every sub-group of students served in every school. The research and science behind the Fast ForWord family of products are a perfect fit for these challenging requirements."

Gross margins were 78% in the first quarter of 2004, compared to 78% in the same quarter of 2003. Operating expenses in the first quarter of 2004 totaled $5.7 million, compared to $5.3 million in the first quarter of 2003. The operating loss for the quarter was $119,000, compared to $300,000 in the first quarter of 2003.

The net loss for the quarter was $163,000 and $.01 per share, compared to a net loss of $610,000 and $.04 per share in the first quarter of 2003.
